Hundreds of goats work to restore part of the Bosque in Albuquerque

Albuquerque, New Mexico (KRQE) – With the help of more than 200 hard-working and hungry workers, the City of Albuquerque will naturally restore part of Bosque, the city’s long green space, that caught fire in 2022. We are making efforts.

“They’re great employees because they’re always excited to go to work,” said Max Wade, owner of Galloping Goats Pumpkin Patch.

230 goats and 15 sheep are the star employees munching on invasive weeds in Bosque, near Montaño. The fire burned 30 acres. Bosque from 2 years ago. “After the fires, much of our native vegetation disappeared and invasive species like tumbleweeds grew,” said Dustin Chavez Davis, open space project coordinator for Albuquerque Parks and Recreation. Weeds have invaded and taken over the view.”

The city worked with Galloping Goat to help clear about 3.5 acres of land along a grassy trail with the herd. Crews have been busy working in the area for the past two and a half weeks. Those who frequent the trail are happy to see the path cleared. “It’s actually quite astronomical how significant the difference is. In fact, this path was so overgrown that you couldn’t walk on it earlier this year,” said Bossk Principal Jesse.・Mr. Barry said.

The city says goats are a cost-effective method and also help fertilize the soil. “This is a very natural thing. This is a very sustainable method. It’s much more rewarding than coming here with bulldozers and chainsaws and rakes and shovels,” Wade said.

The goats have completed the first phase of the restoration project. The city will now begin removing the remaining dangerous burnt trees in the area and preparing the area for planting. “I’m looking forward to the day when it’s restored and the goats can help us,” said Ann Clark, a frequent trail user.

After finishing their work in Bosque, the goats head to their next mission, Sandia Pueblo.
