Hunter Biden is transitioning from what many might consider a dark past to a new venture in cryptocurrency.
He’s preparing to launch his meme coin, dubbed $LAPTOP, which notably references his infamous laptop. This initiative also includes a plan to distribute tokens to investors who faced losses from President Trump’s digital currency.
The launch is scheduled for Wednesday on Coinbase’s blockchain network, Base, as reported by a source familiar with the initiative.
There will be a total of 1 billion tokens available.
Biden and his co-founders are expected to receive about a third of those tokens. However, they can’t sell any for six months, and their full allocation will only be accessible over two years.
In a twist, some investors from Trump’s camp might receive some $LAPTOP tokens for free.
Biden reportedly plans to earmark around 20% of the tokens for those who lost money on the president’s $TRUMP token.
This $TRUMP meme coin has not performed well—trading recently at approximately $2.27, which is almost 97% lower than its peak of $73.43 in January 2025.
It’s estimated that nearly a million retail investors lost around $3.8 billion on this token, based on a report from Democratic staff on a Senate subcommittee.
Other evaluations suggest that losses could range between $3.2 billion and $4.5 billion.
The losses have occurred even though Trump-linked entities have benefited from the situation. According to the official disclosures, Trump Organization affiliates controlled 80% of the original token supply while also profiting from trading revenues.
Since his father’s presidency ended early last year, Hunter Biden has increasingly been in the public eye, discussing his past struggles with addiction and engaging in political commentary on social media. Just last week, he suggested he “might have to” run for president, though this was mostly viewed as unlikely.
The $LAPTOP coin introduces a unique feature: up to 30% of its supply could be permanently eliminated if certain conditions are met. This process, known as “burning,” involves removing coins from circulation, potentially making what’s left more valuable, provided demand stays strong—though that’s not guaranteed.
Events that might trigger these burns include a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential race, bitcoin hitting a new all-time high, or $LAPTOP surpassing the total value of Trump’s coin.
If the conditions aren’t met within the specified timeframes, those coins will be donated to charity, according to the report.
Additionally, some tokens may be allocated for Biden’s Substack followers.
The remaining 20% of the tokens are said to be designated for charitable contributions and liquidity needs, which includes distributions to exchanges and funds for legal, administrative, and compliance expenses associated with the project.
Hunter Biden has recently become an advocate for cryptocurrency, describing decentralized currencies as the “inevitable future” in his online posts.
However, investing in meme coins poses significant risks due to their lack of intrinsic value and the tendency for their prices to drop after initial speculative trading.
This venture into cryptocurrency comes six years after Biden’s laptop drew intense media attention during the 2020 election.
The laptop became a focal point of political debate when its contents—detailing Biden’s foreign business dealings and revealing personal struggles—were publicized by various outlets.
These revelations occurred just weeks before the 2020 presidential election and were met with significant resistance from major technology platforms.
Twitter, for instance, restricted users from sharing links to these reports and locked The Post out of its account for two weeks, while Facebook curtailed the reach of the stories.
Shortly after, a group of 51 former intelligence officials claimed the laptop narrative resembled a Russian disinformation campaign, despite admitting there was no solid evidence of such interference.
However, subsequent forensic investigations confirmed the authenticity of thousands of emails, and federal authorities later verified data from the laptop against information obtained from Biden’s iCloud account.
The Post has reached out for comments from both Hunter Biden and the White House.
