Abbe Lowell, the former attorney for Hunter Biden, is starting a new firm aimed at supporting those opposed to the Trump administration, according to a report from CBS News on Friday.
Lowell and Associates will advocate for individuals who feel they have been “illegally and unfairly targeted” by the administration, as well as “entities and organizations dealing with the wrongful cancellation of grant funding by the Department of Government Efficiency [DOGE] and the federal government,” CBS News stated.
Currently, Lowell is also representing New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was referred to the Department of Justice (DOJ) by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) back in April over a White Collar Fraud report that suggests possible mortgage fraud on her part.
In an April 24 letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Lowell described the referral as “the latest act of improper political retribution.”
“The glaring hypocrisy of President Trump’s complaint about the Justice Department being ‘politicized’ and ‘weaponized’ against him is evident as he and his administration now seek similar actions,” Lowell noted in his correspondence.
Several former members of law firms that made agreements with the administration are joining Lowell’s new practice. This includes Brenna Trout Frey and Rachel Cohen, who resigned from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP after the firm agreed to provide $100 million in pro bono services to the government, as reported by Politico.
Cohen expressed on LinkedIn, “We urgently need lawyers willing to represent cases that directly oppose executive actions. Zealous representation is essential in our legal system to prevent government overreach, regardless of who’s in power.”
Trout Frey criticized Skadden Arps last month, claiming the firm succumbed to the Trump administration’s demands for loyalty and funds. “The only appropriate response from attorneys facing demands from the Trump administration is to uphold the rule of law,” she asserted in her resignation LinkedIn post. “If my employer cannot advocate for the rule of law, then I cannot ethically remain there.”
Besides representing Hunter Biden in his legal issues concerning tax fraud and gun-related matters, Lowell has also provided legal services to Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and former Democratic New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez.
Lowell and Associates was not immediately available for comment.
