Doctors are expressing concerns after Hunter Biden suggested that sleeping pills might have affected his father’s apparent cognitive difficulties during the 2024 presidential debate.
In an interview with YouTube host Andrew Callaghan, Hunter Biden released a statement where he reflected on the performance of his father, former President Joe Biden, during the first presidential debate on June 27, 2024. It had been characterized as “disastrous,” and Hunter raised the possibility that his father’s use of sleep aids contributed to this. Joe Biden eventually withdrew from the race.
Medical professionals are worried about the cognitive issues being highlighted, calling them “troubling indicators.” Hunter noted, “I know exactly what happened in that discussion. He basically flew all over the world and he managed to fly the world three times.” He added, “He’s 81 years old. He’s tired. They give him Ambien so he can sleep. He gets up on stage and he looks like a deer in the headlights.”
Ambien, known generically as Zolpidem, is a medication typically used for short-term management of insomnia, according to GoodRx. It can lead to side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea, among others.
There are also concerns that medications like Ambien could contribute to memory problems and other daytime disturbances. Moreover, more serious side effects, although rare, can include hallucinations and abnormal behavior, raising the risk of dementia, particularly in older adults.
Experts have cautioned that while Ambien can pose risks, it’s crucial to note that it’s not a sedative and its effects should wear off after a night’s sleep. Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, remarked, “We don’t have a verifiable source to make sure this is true about Ambien. He may have been taking anything,” and recognized that it’s not recommended for older individuals.
Dr. Michaela Robbins, a nurse and founder of a medical practice, mentioned the potential for confusion linked to this medication, but acknowledged that a full medical evaluation is essential for proper assessment.
Both doctors stress the importance of careful consideration when it comes to prescribing Ambien, especially for elderly patients. Robbins added that safer alternatives for managing insomnia should be explored, emphasizing that medication confusion is fairly common among older adults, particularly with sedatives.
Overall, the discussion surrounding Joe Biden’s health and medication use raises important questions about the implications of sleep aids in older populations. It remains a subject of ongoing concern and professional debate.
