Former special counsel Robert Hur testified Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee that the White House tried to block his report to the attorney general on President Joe Biden’s misuse of classified documents.
Specifically, the White House sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Deputy Attorney General Brady Weinsheimer, who oversaw Mr. Hur’s work, asking them to change Mr. Hur’s comments about Mr. Biden’s declining memory. I admitted what I asked for.
The testimony corroborated previous reports about President Biden’s attempts to interfere in the investigation.
Democrats and the White House are offended by the conclusion that Mr. Heo is “Mr. John.” Mr. Biden will likely present himself to the jury as he did when we interviewed him, as a sympathetic and well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory. ” Mr. Xu cited that as a reason not to recommend prosecuting Mr. Biden for what is clearly an intentional mishandling of otherwise classified documents, but Mr. Biden and his allies have said that Mr. I am furious at his unflattering comments.
The committee chairman, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), asked Heo to comment on several letters the White House sent to his bosses. Ho said the White House Counsel’s Office and President Biden’s lawyers have the right to write letters to whomever they wish, but the special counsel’s purpose is to operate independently of political interference.
Democrats argued that Mr. Biden was trying to draw a contrast with then-President Donald Trump, who fully cooperated with Mr. Heo’s investigation and refused to be interviewed by special counsel Mueller in the Russian “collusion” investigation.
But Mr. Mueller has no evidence of collusion, and partisan prosecutors are using the interview to do what the FBI did with a surprise visit to National Security Adviser Michael Flynn in early 2021. and tried to deceive Trump.
The Biden administration’s efforts to change Mr. Xu’s report were apparently unsuccessful, potentially raising further questions about political interference in the Justice Department’s investigation and prosecution.
