Congressman Jeff Hurd Secures Victory in Colorado Republican Primary

Congressman Jeff Hurd has emerged victorious in the Colorado Republican primary, gaining traction within his House district even amid fluctuating support from President Donald Trump.

Hurd (R-Colo.) triumphed over former state Rep. Ron Hanks (R-Colo.) in Tuesday’s primary after a competitive endorsement struggle.

The congressman had initially received Trump’s backing in late 2025, marked by enthusiastic remarks. However, when Hurd opposed the president’s tariffs in February, Trump retracted his endorsement.

“Given the lack of support, especially considering the impressive success of tariffs imposed on foreign countries to enrich America, I hereby withdraw my support for Congressman Jeff Hurd,” Trump remarked on Truth Social earlier this year.

Following this, Trump endorsed Hope Schepelman, a nurse and Navy veteran. A month later, he announced that she and her husband would join the administration, stepping back from the race. Currently, Mr. Schepelman is a senior advisor at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

In a surprising turn, Trump reinstated his support for Hurd, urging Republicans to unite against “the crazy radical left Democrats” this November.

The president emphasized that his decision was made with the Schepelmans, stating, “The Democratic alternative is a disaster for our country, and Mr. Hurd deserves to win this district.”

On election day, Trump reiterated his endorsement, underscoring Hurd’s stances on several administration priorities.

“Jeff has a robust record of success and considerable backing from his community. In Congress, he has tirelessly worked to secure our borders, support service members and veterans, enhance America’s energy independence, grow the economy, lower taxes and regulations, promote American manufacturing, protect the Second Amendment, and ensure stability through strength,” said the president.

Hurd is set to compete against Democratic candidate Dwayne Romero, an Army engineer general, in the general election scheduled for November.

“This race has always revolved around who will advocate for Colorado, not who aligns with Washington. In November, voters will clearly choose between conservatives with proven results and Democrats who support policies that inflate living costs, threaten energy independence, and overlook the struggles of rural America,” Hurd stated on social media after the election.

Romero responded to the results, asserting that Hurd fails to grasp the challenges faced by constituents in his district.

“Southern and Western Coloradans deserve a representative who knows their struggles. Jeff Hurd is not that person; he prioritized party and lobbyist interests over Colorado families. I’m prepared to defeat him in November and ensure that Colorado voices are heard in Congress,” Romero declared.
