Isaias batters Southeast as officials confirm Alabama death
As Isaias wreaks havoc across the Southeast, over 438,000 people in Florida are left without power. Fox Weather meteorologist Michael Estime reports on the cleanup challenges in Mobile, Alabama, which has also seen one death linked to the storm. In Rosemary Beach, local resident Kristin Scheurer talks about the flooding and downed power lines in her area following the severe weather.
In Florida, at least three arrests were made after individuals allegedly took advantage of the chaotic situation left by Hurricane Isaias. Sheriff Chip Simmons from Escambia County noted in a Facebook video that Dustin Kelley, 30, and Amanda Carr, 29, approached a woman claiming they were assisting with hurricane recovery efforts.
They asked the woman for help charging their phone, which led her to allow them into her car to use the charger. Simmons mentioned that Carr was emotional and “crying” over the lack of a charger.
However, after the woman exited the vehicle, Kelley and Carr allegedly drove off. A nearby deputy noticed the stolen car and pursued it until it crashed, fortunately without serious injuries reported.
“So these two individuals pretended to need help charging their phone, only to end up stealing a car. They, unfortunately, didn’t realize that we have been actively looking for people like them,” Simmons remarked.
Kelley faces charges for larceny, fleeing police, and possession of marijuana, while Carr has been charged with larceny.
Another individual, Van Gary Spikes Jr., was also arrested after allegedly attempting to break into a 24-hour store by shattering a window during a power outage. The sheriff’s office identified him and confirmed that deputies intervened and stopped the attempted break-in.
Simmons shared, “Our officers were out in full force and caught him trying to escape, but he didn’t get far.” Spikes Jr. is charged with several offenses, including attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, and criminal mischief.
Fox News Digital attempted to reach out to Spikes Jr., Kelley, and Carr for their statements.
