Husband killed doctor, burned her body while their young daughter slept.

A pediatrician from Pennsylvania, Julia Pederson, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Jonathan Gatto, in a shocking act that left their 7-year-old daughter asleep in another room. According to court documents, Gatto, 42, was charged with her murder after he reportedly strangled her and then attempted to cover up the crime by setting their home in Harrisburg on fire.

On Wednesday, authorities revealed that Gatto claimed he was awakened by a smoke alarm early on Saturday, only to find a small fire in a downstairs bedroom. Allegedly, he said he grabbed their daughter and got her outside before calling 911. However, he also mentioned that he injured his hand when he tried to re-enter the house to save Pederson.

Surprisingly, tests indicated that Pederson had died before the fire started, challenging Gatto’s narrative. The reports suggest she was well respected at her job with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Besides first-degree murder, Gatto is facing charges of arson, as well as abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and child endangerment. During questioning by the police, he mentioned that his marriage had been troubled and that they were planning to separate, which would require having a conversation with their daughter about the situation.

The official autopsy revealed multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of Pederson’s death, leading to the ruling of homicide.

In response to this tragic event, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center expressed deep sorrow over Pederson’s passing, describing her as a cherished doctor who dedicated her life to caring for children and supporting families in the community. Her loss is profoundly felt across the organization and beyond.
