Financial Secrets in Marriage
Talking about finances is often tricky, and many avoid it. You’d expect that in a marriage, partners would share income details openly, but that’s not the case for one particular couple.
A wife, feeling frustrated, sought advice on Reddit about her husband’s reluctance to disclose his income. In a now-deleted post on the r/AITA Forum, she mentioned they’ve been together for nine years and married for just one.
She noted that her husband had always kept his financial details to himself. Surprisingly, he takes care of their financial matters while she manages the household. “We’ve settled into this arrangement without issues,” she wrote. Still, he has never shared his annual earnings or offered insights into their finances.
“He even bought our new house without my knowledge. He said it was a surprise,” she explained, mentioning that while she appreciates the surprise, she felt excluded from such major decisions.
Although she doesn’t keep strict tabs on her spending, she has started to track her expenses as she wants to make sure she knows where her own money is going.
Yet, she remains in the dark about her husband’s income. He has refused to show her any account details, telling her to trust that he’s earning well, based on their lifestyle. “I do get that, but if we eventually have kids, my dependence would likely increase,” she pointed out. He brushed her concern off, suggesting it was irrelevant.
The discussion on Reddit highlighted users’ disbelief regarding the husband’s secretive nature. “These topics should be discussed pre-marriage. It’s better late than never, but he seems unwilling to share,” wrote one commenter.
Some went further, suggesting she should think about financial independence. “Find a full-time job, and be cautious about getting pregnant,” advised another.
This situation isn’t isolated. Another story related to a husband, who, due to health reasons, was stuck taking care of their children while his wife worked. She recounted coming home to his complaints about parenting duties. “He only handles one school drop-off and pick-up, yet spends his time doing whatever he wants,” she shared on a UK community site.
