Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) said Sunday that former President Trump is expediting the nomination process because he believes there are certain warning signs imminent that could threaten his path to candidacy. He said he was thinking of doing so.
In an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart, Hutchinson cited the multiple lawsuits against him, the fines and fees he would have to pay, and the fact that nearly 40 percent of South Carolina Republican voters chose Haley over Trump. I mentioned that I voted for Mr.
“I think what Donald Trump is trying to do is get this nomination done very quickly because Donald Trump has multiple court cases, financial rulings against him, and 40% of the Republican base. We want an alternative because we know there’s a storm cloud coming towards us with percent saying, ‘We want an alternative,” Hutchinson said.
Hutchinson suspended her presidential campaign last month and endorsed Haley, but pointed to the convention as an opportunity to endorse another candidate.
Asked if she would support Trump if Haley dropped out of the race, Hutchinson said, “Well, I’m not going to support a convicted felon.”
“And of course, that remains to be seen. So let’s see who comes out of the Republican convention. It’s not over until it’s over,” Hutchinson responded, later adding, “Who comes out of the Republican convention? Let’s see. I’m not going to support a convicted felon.”
Hutchinson is the final nominee if former President Trump is not ultimately convicted of any of the four criminal charges he faces (two at the federal level and two at the state level). He did not say whether he supports Trump.
Hutchinson said the decision was difficult because, as a longtime Republican, he still believes in the Republican Party.
“I’ve always supported Republican candidates. Going in a different direction would be tough. And I still have hope for the Republican Party,” Hutchinson said. “It’s challenging as Nikki Haley sees the direction and challenges in front of her, but she’s working hard to see if she can change those between now and the competition. I’m going to work.”
In response to Hutchinson’s comments, President Trump’s press secretary said in a statement to The Hill: “No one cares what Ada Hutchinson says. He will crawl under whatever rock he crawls out of. I can crawl back into it.”
