Hypersonic jet promises NYC to London in under an hour

Texas-based Venus Aerospace is developing a breakthrough hypersonic jet called Stargazer that could fly from New York City to London in less than an hour, compared to about seven hours today.

This ambitious project aims to revolutionize long-haul travel and redefine the boundaries of civil aviation.

This innovative propulsion system combines a rotating explosive rocket engine (RDRE) with a ramjet, allowing the engine to operate from takeoff to hypersonic speeds without the use of complex mechanical systems. VDR2 is expected to reach speeds of up to Mach 6, or 3,600 miles per hour, and fly at an altitude of 110,000 feet, allowing passengers to see the curvature of the Earth. The aircraft is designed to fly up to 5,000 miles.

On the path to hypersonic commercial flight

Although the possibilities of hypersonic travel are exciting, there are also some challenges to overcome. Stargazer's cost is estimated at $33 million, and passenger capacity will be limited to 12 people. There are also potential problems, such as sonic booms over densely populated areas and regulatory hurdles in obtaining approval for commercial hypersonic flights. But Venus Aerospace is moving quickly to make the vision a reality. It is predicted that Stargazer will be available for commercial use in the 2030s.

If successful, Stargazer could transform long-distance travel and make the world's cities more connected than ever before. However, the path to commercial hypersonic flight is likely to be long and complicated, so it's important to temper the excitement with a sense of reality. While the technological advances being made by Venus Aerospace are promising, numerous hurdles remain before hypersonic travel becomes a reality for everyday passengers.
