"I am undocumented": Democratic lawmaker's bold admission of family fraud falls apart after unsuccessful reversal

Minnesota Rep’s Controversial Admission on Immigration

A representative from Minnesota recently made a striking confession about her family’s immigration status in an effort to advocate for public health benefits for undocumented immigrants.

During a session in the State House, Khaoli Vang, a Democratic member, revealed that she entered the U.S. illegally, claiming that her father had misrepresented family ties in official documents. As her remarks gained traction, they were widely shared and discussed among conservative commentators and media outlets.

“My family is clever in the way we came here illegally.”

These comments surfaced amid protests and rising tensions in cities like Los Angeles and New York regarding immigration policies under former President Donald Trump.

Originally from Laos, Vang discussed her family’s journey to the U.S. while defending the rights of undocumented individuals to receive health care in Minnesota. She became emotional while sharing her story, challenging Republican lawmakers to consider the personal motivations behind such decisions.

She recounted how her father worked at the U.S. Consulate and facilitated their entry after the Vietnam War by falsifying immigration documents. While her uncle had a legal pathway through his government work, Vang’s immediate family faced barriers, leading her father to claim their grandmother as their mother in federal records to navigate these restrictions.

Vang highlighted her father’s role as a document processor for refugees, stating, “My dad was both a paperworker and a mother.” She openly declared, “I’m illegal in this country. My parents are illegal in this country.”

Republicans push back against Democratic lawmakers supporting anti-ICE protests.

Vang urged her colleagues to remember her family’s sacrifices and support health care access for unauthorized immigrants, asserting, “I’ve paid more into this country than I’ve ever taken out.” However, her emotional plea didn’t sway Republican members, who moved forward to remove public health benefits for undocumented individuals.

Following changes enacted in 2023, over 20,000 undocumented immigrants were allowed to register for Minnesota’s public health care, but they risk losing access by the end of 2025 if the current legislative actions pass.

In a later interview, Vang attempted to clarify her admission, stating that her family has since become U.S. citizens. Nonetheless, her attempts to backtrack revealed further complexities about her family’s entry, including more admissions of illegal actions taken by her father.

Reports have emerged suggesting that the family friend Vang referred to as her uncle was not a relative and that his position in international development expedited their entry into the U.S. She questioned whether her father’s actions truly constituted wrongdoing, stating, “Technically, do you say my dad broke the law?”
