I asked my child with mental health issues to leave my home.

A mother recently shared her experience of having to remove her 9-year-old daughter from her home, an act that has drawn significant attention and support on social media.

Megan Morris candidly stated that she found her daughter too challenging to manage, describing the child as “mentally ill.” Morris recounted the difficulty of driving with her daughter when she would become upset over seemingly random things.

Though Morris expressed frustration with her child’s behavior, she acknowledged that her daughter is part of a larger issue, as many young people today face serious mental health challenges.

The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics detailed that about 15% of children aged 5-17 received mental health care in the U.S. in 2021. Alarmingly, 11.3% of children under 11 had received some form of treatment, and 18.9% of teenagers aged 12-17 required similar support.

Now 12, Morris’s daughter has been diagnosed with multiple conditions, including destructive mood dysregulation disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and ADHD. Morris noted that her daughter has undergone extensive treatment for years, trying over 100 medications. She mentioned, with a heavy heart, how her daughter often breaks down, confused about her behavior.

However, one serious concern highlighted was the daughter’s tendency to physically harm her younger siblings. Morris shared instances where her daughter had attacked her siblings, including a risky episode involving a baby and a dog.

Facing criticism online for her actions, Morris urged those judging her to consider what they might do in her situation. Surprisingly, the majority of the responses on social media were supportive, with many praising her for prioritizing the safety of her family. Comments from viewers included expressions of gratitude for her transparency, with some stating that early intervention could prevent more severe issues later in life.

Overall, the story has sparked a wider conversation about the struggles families face when dealing with children’s mental health issues and the difficult choices that sometimes arise.
