Snoop Dogg Reflects on Disney Film with LGBTQ+ Themes and Grandson’s Confusion

Rap icon and game show host Snoop Dogg recently shared his feelings about the animated Disney movie Lightyear, which featured a character with lesbian mothers. During an appearance on the podcast It’s Giving hosted by Sarah Fontenot, he recounted an experience where he took his preteen grandson to watch the film.

Snoop mentioned that he anticipated a simple viewing but instead found himself needing to explain some unusual themes. He took his grandson to see Lightyear, only to be caught off guard when the film introduced two mothers in a family setting. “You bring the kids, and then stuff like this happens,” he said, expressing his surprise at having to explain how two women could have a child.

He recalled a particular moment from the movie: “Kiki Palmer plays a character who has a daughter with her partner. That’s when my grandson was puzzled.” This led to a series of questions. “He stopped and asked, ‘Does she have a baby with a woman?'” Snoop shared, admitting he was not prepared for such queries during what was supposed to be light entertainment.

Expressing his frustration, Snoop said, “I didn’t come here for this, I just wanted to enjoy the movie.” He noted he wanted the boy to enjoy the film without needing a deep discussion on complex topics. “I was just hoping to watch a mediocre movie without this extra baggage,” he stated.

Snoop also mentioned feeling unprepared for the kind of questions children might ask. “These kids are curious, and I just feel like I don’t have the answers, which can be really challenging,” he explained. “I went to see a film for fun, and it turned into a moment I wasn’t ready for.” He emphasized that conversations about relationships and family are important, but that timing and context matter, especially in a children’s setting.

The film Lightyear not only included same-sex couples but also scenes depicting affection between women, which sparked various reactions. Chris Evans, who voiced Buzz Lightyear, defended the film against its critics, calling them outdated in their views.

Released in 2022, Lightyear was considered one of Disney’s less successful films that year, receiving a lukewarm response from audiences and failing to meet expectations, especially compared to earlier entries in the Toy Story franchise.
