California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday suggested that Democrats are struggling with an identity crisis following the devastating losses in the 2024 presidential election.
“I don’t know what the party is,” Newsom said in an interview with hill. “I’m still struggling with that.”
Democrats tried to rebound from losing the House White House, Senate and seats in November.
Polls show that Congress’ approval and confidence in the DEM hit an all-time low, with no clear leader or indication of the party intended to change the policy stance and messaging that was widely rejected by voters last fall.
Newsom, who is considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, added that he has not seen any indications that reflect the reasons Democrats were outperformed by Republicans in last year’s election.
“We’ve never done forensic medicine that was just wrong, period, or complete suspension,” Newsom said. “I’m not thinking about it, I know it.
“So, as long as I have a small portion of this party, I represent a combined population of 21 states. I can assure you that there is no discussion of the party that I know includes California,” added Governor Golden State.
Newsom argued that without introspection, Democrats are destined to “repeat” past mistakes, and once again lamented the fact that “we haven’t even stress-tested what hell happened.”
Despite his demands for deep remorse, Newsom refused to analyse the failed billion-dollar presidential campaign of Kamala Harris’ former vice president.
When asked what Harris did in the race with Donald Trump, the governor said he “will be hard to answer.”
“I think it’s unfair to answer that,” Newsom continued, noting that Harris had taken the race in July 2024 after former President Joe Biden finished his re-election bid.
“We are all geniuses, not just hindsight experts,” he said. “And I thought [Harris’s team] Running a highly effective 107-day campaign, all her strengths were there. ”
Newsom was a party representative for both Biden and Harris in 2024, travelling the country to elevate their message.
Harris is reportedly considering a bid to feature Newsom’s mantle in Sacramento in 2026. She is expected to decide to run for governor of California by the end of the summer.
Meanwhile, Newsom kept his political future quiet, telling comedian Bill Maher last month that “I don’t have any grand plans.”
