Former Senator Scott Brown, who is running for the seat of retiring New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen, expressed his views about trade inequities during his time as New Zealand’s ambassador in President Donald Trump’s first term.
When discussing Trump’s broader agenda, Brown remarked, “I saw trade inequities in New Zealand.” He pointed out the discrepancies in trade practices: “They charge us a lot for wood and dairy products, but we hardly charge them anything in return. It’s really about fairness.”
He believes the President aims to emphasize the financial aspect of these issues: “Don’t forget about the money imbalance. As a consumer nation, we need to address this.” He continued, mentioning countries that restrict American goods, like Japan and the EU, which limit imports of rice, pork, beef, and cars. “By opening up these markets, we can create opportunities for American businesses to export.”
listen:
“The essence of what he’s trying to do is to open those markets, and that’s crucial. Honestly, I have my concerns, but there are two things I’m keeping an eye on,” Brown added.
He expressed his intention to propose a bill in the Senate aimed at ensuring the success of trade agreements: “Every penny from these deals should benefit us.” Brown cautioned against simply handing out cash, emphasizing the need to address national debt instead: “We want the administration’s support for this. It’s a ticking time bomb.”
