"I Failed Her": Tim Walz Indicates He Was Too Kind to JD Vance During Debate

Governor Tim Walz Reflects on Vice Presidential Debate

During a recent speech at the MinnPost Festival, Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz suggested that he might have been too kind to Vice President JD Vance in their upcoming debate scheduled for October 1, 2024.

Walz, who has faced scrutiny for his performance during the debate, acknowledged the challenges he encountered in that discussion. He indicated that while it was important to treat each other with respect, he felt some of his points were overshadowed. He noted, “I think it’s good to be nice, but I also know my subject well.” This sentiment, while confident, seemed to hint at his struggles during the previous encounter.

When a moderator pointed out that his politeness might have elevated Vance’s image, Walz seemed to backtrack slightly. He mentioned that it was essential for both politicians to portray a more relatable side. Yet, he didn’t fully commit to the idea that cooperation was Vance’s strength in that context.

In her book “107 Days,” former Vice President Kamala Harris critiqued Walz for appearing overly friendly during the debate, suggesting he should not have shown camaraderie towards someone who was ostensibly attacking his campaign. Her critique pointed out that achieving bipartisanship shouldn’t come at the cost of being firm in debates.

Harris also highlighted a notable blunder where Walz claimed he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, a mistake that drew further criticism. Following the debate, media pundits, including those from MSNBC, expressed disappointment in Walz’s inability to challenge Vance effectively.

In summary, Walz’s reflections raise questions about the balance between civility and assertiveness in political debates, particularly during critical moments. His candid acknowledgment of his approach suggests a deeper consideration of how kindness is perceived in a competitive political landscape.
