Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Nevada, retired. Army Capt. Sam Brown joins CyrusXM Breitbart News Saturdaywhere he talked about his new book, Alive Day: Finding hope and purpose after losing everythingThis book chronicles the fateful day he was severely burned on the battlefield in Afghanistan and how he found meaning in the midst of it.
Breitbart News Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle asked Brown what exactly “Alive Day” was.
“An Alive Day…is a story we hear from the wounded warrior community,” Brown said. “And this day is also a day to kind of celebrate that we may have expected and should have died on the battlefield, but due to miraculous circumstances or I didn't because of my fellow soldiers who came up to us and put out the flames in my case. For others, it's things like applying a tourniquet before bleeding occurs. So this is kind of a new birthday. ”

Brown said that although he treats and celebrates his Alive Day like a birthday, his actual birthday is not equally important to him.
“So my Alive Day was 16 years ago this month,” Brown said. “It was the day I was in Afghanistan, I was a young infantry platoon leader, and a friendly unit in another unit was under fire and needed support. Just like there was, we needed support.'' When your teammates are under fire, you have to run towards the sound of the gun and go to support them. ”
While en route to support, Brown's platoon was hit by a roadside bomb, killing one of the soldiers and wounding Brown and three others. He tells Boyle that he found God when he was seriously injured in the desert.
“In the midst of all this, at the age of 24, I was lying in the desert, thinking I was about to die, wishing for death to escape the pain. That's when I found God,” he said. Ta. . “And that's where I found a new life. When the soldiers came to me and shouted, 'Sir, I've got you,' you know,” and to put out that flame. I put myself at risk.”
Brown was medically transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. The intensive care unit is where Brown, who would go on to undergo dozens of reconstructive surgeries, met Amy, a nurse with whom he would later fall in love and marry.
“Amy worked in the intensive care unit in the burn unit, and I had just come in and didn't know her at all,” Brown explained. “In fact, she had seen me before I had seen her because I came in on a ventilator. I was intubated and unconscious. But the days turned into weeks, into weeks. , as the months progressed, I finally got to meet her.
Amy was there for him at his “weakest moments.”
“This was like the lowest point of my life. I was basically bandaged from head to toe every day,” Brown recalled. “I could barely feed myself. I couldn't bathe or dress myself at all. So not only did I lose my identity, I was at my most vulnerable and most vulnerable. So… My face was badly burned and scarred, and I ended up needing more than 30 surgeries all over my body for reconstruction, and through it all, Amy was there, loving me and telling me no one else. You supported me even when I didn't know how to be loved.”
The Browns have been married for 15 years and have three children, two sons ages 13 and 9, and an 11-year-old daughter.
“She is truly an amazing woman, a woman of God, who served her country in the hospital in Iraq and in Iraq in 2009 and 2010. She is a great friend of mine and a key member of my Senate campaign. But it's still here with us,'' Brown said.
Mr. Boyle asked Mr. Brown how he would apply the lessons learned from Alive Day and recovery in the Senate if he defeats Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) in November.
“One of the lessons I took from the battlefield was that my life is not my own, and…that doesn't seem to be a common perspective for some people in D.C., and you know… , we recognize that the mission is greater than any individual,” Brown said. “We have a mission here, to serve our fellow Americans, to save this country, to be leaders in this world, and, you know, to help the world find peace through strength. And these are some of the things that I distilled that I hope I can bring back to Washington, D.C., on behalf of the people of Nevada after this election.”
Mr. Brown also emphasized that he has learned that there is hope to be found even in the most difficult and difficult struggles and conflicts.
“Yes, I literally went through a searing melting pot, but we all go through some form of suffering, and that’s really the point of this book. alive day“We all, at some point, experience a life-changing moment, an unexpected event, or some form of suffering,” he pointed out. “Sometimes it's internal and quietly hidden, but sometimes it's visible, like my scars. But we can find hope, we can find peace, and in the midst of it… You can find purpose within. That's why I recommend this book to everyone who will listen, whether you or someone you know, may find it encouraging.”
