Jean-Pierre Defends Biden’s Capabilities
In a recent appearance on CNN’s “News Central,” former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed that she has “no concerns” regarding former President Joe Biden’s mental fitness during his time in office.
BRIANNA KEILER: My colleague Jake Tapper, alongside Alex Thompson, noted that some Cabinet members felt Biden wasn’t equipped for those critical “2 a.m. calls.” George Clooney even mentioned he didn’t recognize Biden at a fundraiser he hosted. We’re in 2023 and heading into 2024—why didn’t we notice any issues? Why didn’t we raise concerns?
Jean-Pierre: Honestly, I didn’t have any worries, Brianna. I interacted with him daily, you know? Did he show signs of aging? Sure, that’s undeniable. But he is a sharp president who keeps his team on their toes. He has prioritized significant policies for the American people. Look at his leadership during the Ukraine conflict—he was rallying a coalition, something we haven’t seen in decades. There was a lot happening. As you mentioned, these are truly unprecedented times. Objectively, we had some remarkable successes during those early years of his presidency. That’s just my personal view, based on what I’ve observed.
Keilar: That’s not quite what I’m asking, Karine. Do you think he should continue to be president now? Is he truly capable of serving another term until 2029 in his current state?
Jean-Pierre: When he decided to run for president, I had no concerns at all. This is the person I interacted with daily. He is sharp and focused on the repercussions of the issues facing the American public. I’m sharing my personal perspective based on my day-to-day experiences. About the Vice President’s book—sure, I can only provide my viewpoint based on what I’ve seen. I cannot discuss details from sources I haven’t accessed.
Keilar: But you’ve said you won’t read the book, Karine. Why not? If there’s a breakdown in workplace leadership and someone publishes a book with numerous credible sources, wouldn’t many want to read it and reflect on it? Why avoid it?
Jean-Pierre: Well, I’ve lived it firsthand every single day. And Brianna, we have to focus on our current situation. We’re facing unprecedented challenges. People are on the streets because military forces are cracking down on minorities and citizens. The rule of law seems disregarded. That’s my focus. Yes, I wanted to shed light on my personal experiences. As the White House Press Secretary, I also want to address the serious state of affairs we’re in. These are perilous times. I, along with millions of Americans, urge the Democratic Party to recognize the moment. I aim to foster conversations that are crucial. I mentioned my experiences with President Biden, but we must also pay attention to the current moment. These are unsettling times.
Keilar: Absolutely, we discuss this every day on the show—what’s happening at this moment and how we arrived here is critical. It’s certainly important to reflect on our journey to this point.
