Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas expressed that she has no worries about former President Joe Biden’s mental fitness during his time in office. In a closed-door interview with former White House doctor Kevin O’Connor, which took place on Wednesday morning, she shared her views alongside House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky.
Crockett explained to reporters that Biden’s occasional misstatements are related to his stutter and also took the opportunity to raise questions about Donald Trump’s mental state. When asked if she had any concerns regarding Biden’s mental capabilities, she replied, “No, I had nothing.”
Crockett acknowledged that Biden himself had commented on the challenges of speaking clearly, noting that the 80-year-old president is different from the younger version of himself. She mentioned, “He might mix up some words, but I think that’s not necessarily a new issue attributable to age.”
She noted that while some techniques he learned to manage his stutter may have lessened over time, his mental acuity remains sharp. “Yeah, he might turn around some words and stuff like that,” she said. She highlighted that, on matters of foreign policy, Biden shows a strong grasp of the issues, particularly regarding his interactions with other world leaders.
Crockett drew attention when she appeared at Capitol Hill for O’Connor’s testimony, having not spoken to the media beforehand. Following the interview, she accused Comer of mischaracterizing O’Connor’s choice to invoke the Fifth Amendment.
She stated that it was crucial for Democrats to be present during these discussions since narratives can sometimes be shaped by selective storytelling. Comer has criticized O’Connor’s actions, indicating that the committee is investigating claims of a cover-up related to Biden’s mental health decline by his former assistants.
