I Paused Some Tariffs Because ‘I Wanted to Help Mexico and Canada’ and U.S. Carmakers

“Because part of Mexico and Canada's planned tariffs helped Mexico and Canada to a certain extent until April 2nd, during an interview with the FOX Business Network, which aired on Sunday's “Sunday Morning Futures,” which aired on Friday's “Morning with Maria.” “I wanted to help American car makers until April 2nd,” Trump also cited the USMCA as a reason.

Host Maria Bartiromo said, “You spoke with the President of Mexico today. I want to talk about tariffs because even if you see this optimism and excitement, there's some tension in your tariffs, the market is sold out and people don't know how to see it. Why did you roll back or pause? [on] Part of the customs duties until April 2nd? ”

Trump said, “Because we wanted to help Mexico and Canada to some extent. We are a big, big country, and they have a lot of business with us, but in our case, that's not that important. By comparison, we do very little to Canada. And I wanted to help the American automakers, until April 2nd. Until April 2nd, it's all mutual and they charge us, and we charge them. It's a big deal. But what they charge us, we charge them. But this is short-term, and for the benefit of the American automakers and… USMCA, I felt that I thought it was fair. So I gave them a little break for this short period.”
