I share parenting duties with ChatGPT — I enjoy relaxing and allowing AI to assist in raising my child

Using AI for Parenting Support

Lillian Schmidt, a 33-year-old corporate brand strategist from Zurich, Switzerland, found herself overwhelmed by the mental load of motherhood. So, she decided to train ChatGPT to assist her in parenting. This AI tool helps her draft shopping lists, plan meals, organize birthdays and holidays, and even streamline bedtime routines.

“I use it to make me a better mom,” she explained, emphasizing how technology can provide a helping hand in raising her three-year-old daughter. “I think I’ll never look back.”

Schmidt’s story reflects a broader trend among millennial parents, many of whom experience burnout from the demands of parenting. A study from Ohio State University revealed that over half of millennial parents feel stressed and fatigued by the challenges of raising children.

In this context, more parents like Schmidt are turning to AI for advice on various parenting issues, including health tips and storytelling. Experts have commended systems like ChatGPT for their creativity and creative problem-solving capabilities.

Schmidt believes this tool enhances her parenting rather than replaces her role. “My partner is very involved, and we share responsibilities,” she noted. However, she acknowledges that they approach tasks differently, leading to a feeling of stress in her busy life. “I often feel the mental load, especially in the evenings after a long workday,” she explained.

After work, around 5 PM, she finds herself trying to balance dinner prep with managing her children’s needs. “It’s just a lot,” she admitted. The idea of using an AI to lighten that load appealed to her as she struggled with traditional parenting challenges.

Since February, Schmidt has relied on ChatGPT for parenting advice. Initially, she found the responses somewhat generic, but she learned to customize the prompts. The AI now takes on tailored roles, acting as a meal planner or even an “expert toddler coach.” “I ask for help planning meals or understanding my daughter’s behavior,” she said.

For instance, bedtime had become a significant struggle for her daughter. “I would ask ChatGPT why bedtime is tough,” she shared. With insights from the AI, she shifted her approach, leading to much smoother evenings. “It used to involve a lot of tears, but now she falls asleep in five to ten minutes.” The AI even offers suggestions for independent play, allowing Schmidt a bit more downtime.

Despite these advantages, Schmidt emphasizes that ChatGPT isn’t a replacement for human connection or professional advice. It simply gives her space to manage her emotions as a busy parent. “It helps me navigate my feelings,” she said, acknowledging the challenges of parenting.

Schmidt’s Tips for Using ChatGPT in Parenting

  • Utilize it as an expert for specific queries, like meal planning.
  • Personalize it to your family’s needs.
  • Be cautious about sharing sensitive information.
  • Seek professional advice for serious issues.
  • Use the AI’s suggestions as a guide but make your own choices.

While Schmidt’s life is certainly hectic with challenges still present, the integration of AI has made some aspects of parenting feel more manageable for her.
