‘I treasure the name with grace’

Meghan Markle has called Nigeria her “home” in an emotional letter addressed to the Oluwu of Iwo, a dominant figure in Nigerian society.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the West African country on a three-day tour last month, during which the “Suits” star referred to Nigeria as “my country.”

During the visit, Markle, 42, was honoured by the traditional ruler, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi.

After the trip, Markle penned a heartfelt letter to Prince Harry, thanking him for bestowing the title of chief and for looking after her and Harry.

“Your Majesty, I thank you for your warm welcome to Nigeria and am deeply honoured to have been blessed with my traditional Yoruba name, Adetokunbo. I cherish this name and appreciate Your Majesty’s trust to bear it with grace and dignity,” Markle wrote in the letter, which was obtained by local media. Western Post.

“My visit to Nigeria was important for many reasons, not the least of which was the opportunity it gave me to explore and understand my heritage, which I will pass on to my children. We look forward to returning one day.”

The former actress signed the letter with the official symbol: “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.”

Markle and Harry, who stepped down as royals in 2020, were invited to Nigeria by Nigeria’s highest-ranking military officer, the Chief of Defence Staff.

Prince Harry, meanwhile, told the outlet that the trip was an important one for the couple and for the Invictus Games as a whole.

“In a way, it’s always fun to travel, but these trips are also about getting outside and focusing on things that are very important to us and supporting causes that are close to our hearts,” he said.
