Brandon Gill’s Stance on Senate Bills

On Friday, 32-year-old Representative Brandon Gill, a Republican from Texas, declared that he will vote against all Senate bills, with the exception of those related to Department of Homeland Security funding, until the Senate approves the SAVE America Act.

This legislation, which requires proof of citizenship for voter registration, barely passed in the House last month. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has indicated that he will bring the bill to the Senate floor next week.

Former President Donald Trump has been vocal in supporting the SAVE America Act and recently issued a strong ultimatum. He emphasized that the proof-of-citizenship requirements in the bill are critical and must be prioritized during this session.

“It surpasses everything else. MUST GO TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE. I, as president, will not sign other bills until this is passed,” Trump remarked, highlighting the urgency behind the bill.

In line with Trump’s views, many House Republicans, led by figures like Morgan Luttrell from Texas, have taken to social media to express their commitment. These statements reinforce a solid front within the party, indicating that they are ready to support the administration’s goals.

“The Senate will no longer have legislation passed until the SAVE America Act is on the President’s desk,” Representative Anna Paulina Luna tweeted recently.

“I’m not supporting Senate Bills unless they achieve over 80% approval from Americans until the SAVE America Act is passed. I’m done with this nonsense,” added Representative Derrick Van Orden from Wisconsin.

On Wednesday, Representatives Randy Fine from Florida, Keith Self from Texas, and Mark Harris from North Carolina wrote an opinion piece expressing their frustrations regarding the Senate’s inaction on the bill.

“Enough is enough. It’s time for House Republicans to draw a line in the sand: We are prepared to vote no on any Senate legislation until the upper chamber stops dragging its feet and passes the SAVE America Act,” they stated in unison.

Additionally, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running for a Senate seat, mentioned on March 5 that he would consider withdrawing from the race if Senate leaders agreed to lift the filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act.

Meanwhile, Thune has been under increasing pressure from fellow Republicans to advance the act. Although they have a slim majority in the Senate, they will need some Democratic support to reach the 60 votes required to overcome the filibuster. Thune previously remarked that “the votes aren’t there for a talking filibuster.”
