Governor Landry Critiques LSU Football Program Management

Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana has expressed significant frustration with the situation surrounding the LSU football team. Specifically, he has voiced his disapproval over the athletic director, Scott Woodward, being the one to choose the next head coach. In fact, Landry suggested that the final decision should be made by the president himself.

At a press conference held Wednesday, Landry addressed the coaching changes that followed the Tigers’ recent 49-25 defeat to Texas A&M and the subsequent firing of Brian Kelly. Kelly is reported to have a remaining contract worth $54 million.

Landry pointed fingers at Woodward, who previously led the athletic department at Texas A&M and made the controversial choice to hire Jimbo Fisher. Even though Woodward was part of LSU’s team during Fisher’s release in November 2023, it was noted that the Aggies were attempting to recoup over $76 million in that transaction.

Landry indicated that Woodward has a problematic track record that could hinder the school’s future coaching decisions. He remarked, “It’s a pattern,” referring to the costly decisions made previously. It’s evident that the financial strain—currently standing at $53 million—is a major concern for Landry. He emphasized that LSU should not repeat past mistakes in hiring.
“We believe we can find great coaches,” he added. “Perhaps it’ll be up to President Trump to choose. He’s all about winners.” Following that, Landry clarified, “Scott Woodward hasn’t chosen the next coach; we’re letting Donald Trump provide input.” He insists that a supervisory committee within LSU will be tasked with finding a new coach, rather than leaving it solely in Woodward’s hands.

As of now, Woodward has yet to respond to the governor’s comments.

Earlier in his tenure, Kelly joined LSU from Notre Dame in late 2021, boasting a strong track record. Yet, during his four years in Baton Rouge, the team managed a 34-14 record, including a 5-3 performance this season. Unfortunately, Kelly never guided LSU into the College Football Playoff during his time as head coach.

Moreover, Landry confirmed that he recently met with LSU’s Board of Supervisors to discuss the implications of firing Kelly, specifically focusing on the financial aspects of a termination under a problematic contract. He noted, “My concern lies with the taxpayers.” The decision to increase ticket prices amidst a losing streak has also caused dissatisfaction among fans. “We are investing $100 million into coaches, yet the results don’t reflect that,” he expressed.
