Ian Rapoport’s Future Uncertain Amid NFL-ESPN Merger
Ian Rapoport’s position with the NFL Network is currently unclear, especially with the recent announcement of a partnership between ESPN and the NFL.
In a conversation with Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Rapoport expressed that he is uncertain about his future since his contract will end in May, especially with Adam Schefter now leading the coverage at ESPN.
“I want to be clear; there’s a lot I don’t know,” Rapoport explained. “Nobody’s telling me, ‘This will happen next,’ so it’s a bit of a guessing game right now. ESPN is really good at what they do, and I’m looking forward to whatever changes come. From what I gather, we’ll see more football coverage and additional investments in NFL Network, which is exciting.”
Competing with Schefter since 2012 and having previously reported on the Patriots, Rapoport seems open to collaboration. “I think it’d be fantastic if we could team up,” he remarked. “I’m not sure if that will happen, but it would be a bit like ‘The Avengers’ if it does.”
This uncertainty surrounding Rapoport is just one of the implications following the approval of the NFL-ESPN merger, valued at around $3 billion.
As part of the deal, the NFL will take a 10% stake in ESPN, and the NFL Network will be integrated into the ESPN framework.
Additionally, ESPN will gain rights to the RedZone channel and will merge the NFL.com fantasy football project with ESPN.com.
In a joint statement, the NFL and ESPN expressed, “The sale of NFL Network and other NFL media assets to ESPN has been finalized. We will start integrating NFL employees into the ESPN team in the upcoming months. Fans can look forward to enhanced NFL programming, improved access to NFL Network, and innovative fantasy experiences, not to mention unparalleled coverage of the sport that captivates America.”
