On Wednesday, the coastal town of Grindavik, next to the iconic Blue Lagoon, was ordered evacuated due to a volcanic eruption at the Sundnukul crater. The town is home to around 3,000 people.
Officials said the volcano erupted after a series of earthquakes in the area, shooting lava up to 164 feet high and creating a fissure about two miles long.
“Scientists’ initial assessment is that the start of this eruption is more powerful than previous eruptions,” the Icelandic Meteorological Office said in a statement.
Members of the search and rescue team assessed the situation.
“The first place we evacuated was the Blue Lagoon, there were a lot of people there. I could tell you the number but I’d be lying – probably more than 100 people,” search and rescue worker Bergvin Sunnar Andresson said. “We also evacuated people who lived in Grindavík and worked there. It varies from day to day, but we knew about the eruption early on and we were able to evacuate (them) before the eruption happened.”
Meanwhile, authorities are still monitoring the situation but insist it is under control.
