IDF Claims Palestinian Soccer Players Involved with Terrorism

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have stated that the Palestinian national soccer players targeted in a recent military strike are believed to have ties to terrorist activities with Hamas and other extremist groups. In a statement to Fox News Digital, the IDF emphasized that claims suggesting they intentionally struck innocent players are unfounded.

“In recent weeks, there have been misleading allegations regarding the IDF’s actions during the war,” the IDF noted. They are now disclosing the identities of individuals who, while presented internationally as athletes, actually operated within the military wings of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in Gaza, leading to their engagement by IDF forces during the conflict.

The IDF has identified several players, including Mohamed Mohamed Hassan Barakat and Mahmoud Kamal Mohammad Ali Al Rifi, among others, outlining that three of these individuals are suspected of involvement in the October 7, 2023, massacre, with others allegedly playing significant roles in various terrorist operations.

“The narrative suggesting that the IDF is purposely targeting soccer community members was propagated as part of a broader effort against Israel,” added the IDF. They further highlighted that some linked to terror acts have been depicted as journalists and humanitarian workers, masking their actual involvement in terrorist activities.

Iran Allegedly Used Soccer Club for Espionage

In recent developments, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) claimed that around 1,009 members of the soccer community have lost their lives due to IDF actions since the conflict began in October 2023. This comes amid tense diplomatic efforts on the global sports front.

For over two years, the PFA, headed by Djibril Rajoub, has been pushing the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and FIFA to impose a ban on Israel from international events, citing the rising casualties among Palestinian athletes and the destruction of sports facilities in Gaza.

At a recent FIFA meeting, the PFA’s calls for Israel’s suspension reached a critical point. However, after careful legal review, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee chose to deny the request for a permanent ban on Israel, opting instead to fine the Israel Football Association (IFA) for unrelated infractions. They also mandated that Israeli teams display banners promoting unity in football.

Despite these penalties, FIFA has not completely distanced itself from the IFA. The Israeli association was fined 150,000 Swiss francs (around $190,700) for various anti-discrimination breaches and required to develop a plan addressing these issues while also promoting the message that “Football Unites the World – Against Discrimination” during matches.
