IDF Chief of Staff, Southern Command General Resign over October 7

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Helj Halevi resigned on Tuesday, citing the military's failure to predict the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. Maj. Gen. Yaron Finkelman, who heads IDF Southern Command, also announced his intention to resign.

The resignations came days after a ceasefire and hostage arrangement took effect between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, marking the end of major combat operations during the war (for now).

Halevi issued the following statement through the IDF:

I conveyed to the Minister of Defense today (Tuesday) that I recognize my responsibility for the IDF's failure on October 7 and that the IDF has achieved important results and is in the process of implementing the hostage release agreement. I did. , I have requested to leave my position on March 6, 2025. By then, I will complete the IDF's investigation into the events of October 7 and strengthen the IDF's preparedness for security challenges. I will hand over command of the Israel Defense Forces to my successor in a quality and thorough manner. I have written to the Minister of Defense and the Prime Minister regarding this matter.

Halevi had previously indicated that he would step down after the war was won.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not immediately react to the resignation. He announced a new anti-terrorism operation, the Iron Wall, in the Palestinian-controlled West Bank city of Jenin.

Some Israelis are calling for Prime Minister Netanyahu to resign as well. He has refused to consider the idea, but said there would be a full investigation into the Oct. 7 failure and accountability after the war is won.
