Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Arabic spokesman Colonel Avichai Adlai said on Thursday that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had killed him in a gunfight in the Gaza Strip after it was confirmed that an IDF soldier had killed him in a gunfight in the Gaza Strip. A meme mocking him was published on social media.
The meme shows the famous photo of Sinwar sitting in an armchair at the height of his power, and then in another armchair in an image taken by an IDF drone before he was killed. The last moments of his life are shown sitting.
The meme says “before” and “after” in Arabic, and the caption indicates that he met a “tragic fate.”
Shinwar was killed by ordinary infantry and armored soldiers in a chance encounter, rather than as part of a targeted operation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a speech in Hebrew and English on Thursday, offering a vision of peace for the region following Shinwar's death and urging Hamas terrorists still holding Israeli hostages to take prisoners. He said he would give them a chance to live if they were released.
Early in the war, Prime Minister Netanyahu appears in Gaza, sitting in an armchair and talking to Israeli combat troops. The incident was considered a notable event on Arabic social media and was taken as a mockery of Sinwar, who was believed to be underground.
