On FBN's “Mornings with Maria” on Friday, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) spoke about Gov. Kathy Hochul's (D-N.Y.) plan to impose so-called surge fees on people driving into Manhattan. responded to the proposal.
Hochul argues that these moves encourage New Yorkers to take the subway to and from Manhattan.
But Malliotakis said if Hochul was serious about promoting public transit use, he would do more to create a safer passenger experience.
“Governor Hochul repealed the idea of surge pricing for congestion and imposed a tax on New York City,” said substitute host Cheryl Casson. “You have sought legal redress here. Where is this?”
“Well, it's still in court,” Malliotakis replied. “We are fighting this issue and we will never give up. Obviously, President Trump is also here and we are looking for opportunities for him to intervene here. I have spoken to President Trump about this issue. He understands how dire this will be for New York City's economy, not to mention costing the average working New Yorker thousands of dollars a year.
“The governor wants us to take the subway, but then we need to make it safe,” she continued. “So you can't tax us to death and then try to force people into the subways. That's not going to happen. There's going to be no people coming to Manhattan. Make the subways safe. Let's see. We'll see less dependence on cars and more people using the system. But we hope the Trump administration will step in here and demand that an environmental impact study be conducted. are. [National Environmental Policy Act] Legal Requirements. That's why we file a lawsuit. Because the Biden administration can rubber-stamp the Hochul plan without that investigation. So we are currently considering those options. ”
“And Mr. Trump says he will cooperate,” Casone said. “Mr. Trump says he's going to get involved.”
“Well, President Trump has said he opposes congestion charges and wants to support us,” Malliotakis added. “We just need to find the appropriate legal recourse.”
