House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York emphasized the dangers of the 2024 election in an interview on “60 Minutes” on Sunday, saying more than just abortion rights are at risk if former President Trump wins a second term. He warned that he would be exposed.
He told CBS’ Norah O’Donnell that reproductive freedom would be a “very important” issue in his campaign.
“And then extreme MAGA Republicans began the erosion of reproductive freedom,” he said. “We are going to fight for this with everything we have.”
“If Roe v. Wade can be lost, anything can be lost,” he continued. “Social Security could collapse. Medicare could collapse. Voting rights could go down. And God help us all, democracy itself could collapse.” If Roe v. Wade can be lost, anything can be lost.”
Jeffries’ comments come as Democrats look to battleground states focused on abortion rights debates, as Arizona, Florida, Montana and others prepare for ballot issues on abortion rights. Ta.
Republican state lawmakers in Arizona last week rolled back a Civil War-era abortion regulation after multiple attempts and massive criticism from Democrats, and another strict abortion law went into effect in Florida on Wednesday. Ta.
But Jeffries also said Democrats need to act with a positive message, not just warn Republicans about what they could take away. He cited gun safety regulations and investment in manufacturing as “real accomplishments.”
But as the Biden campaign struggles to turn the tide, polls show most Americans still perceive the Biden economy to be weaker than the one under President Trump.
“We need to do a better job of communicating the fact that the economy has improved dramatically under President Joe Biden’s leadership,” Jeffries said.
He said the messaging issue was “ongoing.”
“Voters understand that more needs to be done and that challenges remain.” “We understand that we need to reduce costs. We must stop price gouging. We must grow the middle class. We must protect the safety of our communities. We have to solve the problems and challenges at our borders.”
“We are on the right side of these issues,” he continued. “And we need to make sure we get that message across to the American people in a way that is compelling, clear and comprehensive.”
