‘If You’re that Sensitive, Don’t Go to the Theatre’

Dame Judi Dench has a simple word for those in need of warning: “If you’re that sensitive, you shouldn’t go to the theater.”

The 89-year-old British actress was asked about her thoughts on trigger warnings in a recent news report. interview with the British one Radio Times.

“Do they do that?” Dench replied. “My God, that’s a pretty long warning in front of King Lear and Titus Andronicus.”

“I understand why they exist, and I think that’s what prepares people, but if you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theater. It could be very shocking.” Where is the wonder in seeing and understanding it in your own way?”

She continued: Isn’t the purpose of going to the theater to see something that excites, surprises, and inspires you? It’s like being told that they all died at the end of King Lear. I don’t want you to say that. ”

Many theater companies add trigger warnings before performances to warn audiences of potentially upsetting content. In the past, companies have warned audiences about strobe lighting and other stage effects. However, warnings now also apply to “offensive” content such as depictions of minorities and women in classical plays.

As reported by Breitbart News, Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London will add trigger warnings before performances of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar in 2022, warning of on-stage violence, war, and self-harm. , warned the audience about suicide.

Judi Dench is the latest star to violate a trigger warning.

Ralph Fiennes told the BBC earlier this year: “I think the impact of a play should be that people are shocked and upset. Back then, there were never any trigger warnings for the show.”
