Iga Swiatek dominates Amanda Anisimova to secure her first Wimbledon title

Saturday marked my debut at Center Court.

In a remarkable display, American player Amanda Anisimova faced off against four-time French Open champion Iga Świątek in their inaugural Wimbledon Finals. Both athletes showcased their skill with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 score at the All England Club.

This outcome is notable as it’s the first instance since 1988 where the loser didn’t secure a single game in a women’s final.

Though Świątek typically excels on clay, she was the clear favorite. Yet, Anisimova’s impressive upset against top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals should not be overlooked.

Despite her specialty on clay, making her debut on grass puts her among the few active female players to reach Grand Slam Finals on all surfaces.

This became evident right from the start.

The disparity between the two players was apparent early on, indicating Świątek’s dominance on grass.

Anisimova seemed to struggle with her nerves, unable to adapt to Świątek’s powerful returns.

In the first game, the Polish player dropped just one point and quickly broke Anisimova’s serve.

The American’s troubles became apparent as she faltered, leading to a first set that ended with 22 unforced errors against just seven from Świątek, wrapping up in a mere 25 minutes.

Although Anisimova tried to regroup in the second set, the frustration became visible, especially after losing her serve once more in the first game.

Errors continued to plague her performance, making it tough to watch for those in her corner.

The match unfolded in front of notable spectators including Catherine, Princess of Wales, Matthew McConaughey, and legends like Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova.

The narrative, however, isn’t all somber for American women’s tennis.

Anisimova’s win in the semi-finals marked her as the fourth American woman to reach the finals in all four major tournaments in this timeframe.

Jessica Pegula also marked her presence in Grand Slam finals this year.

Earlier in January, Madison Keys clinched the Australian Open, followed by Coco Gauff, who secured her second major title at the French Open in June.

Yet, Anisimova couldn’t quite achieve the trifecta.

It was the last time a string of four different American women competed in the finals of four consecutive majors was way back between 1983 and 1984.
