Ilhan Omar Celebrates Zohran Mamdani's Win in NYC Primary: 'Thank God!'

Omar Celebrates Mamdani’s Primary Victory for NYC Mayor

Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) expressed her enthusiasm for Zoran Mamdani’s triumph in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, calling it an “incredible victory.”

In a post on X, Omar extended her gratitude to New Yorkers, advising them not to allow “biased and corrupt billionaires” to prevail. Her commendation of Mamdani followed recognition from former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), who acknowledged Mamdani’s position ahead of the other candidates.

“Congratulations @Zohrankmamdani!” Omar shared. “This victory is a testament to the grassroots movement you cultivated. This is also your win, not the billionaires’.” She also encouraged him for the general election, stating, “We’re all rooting for you. Alhamdulira!”

The term “Alhamdulira” translates to “All praise is due to Allah.”

Mamdani is currently ahead of his opponent, stating he is “honored” to be the Democratic candidate for mayor. The results of the race are determined through New York City’s ranked-choice voting system.

As previously reported, Mamdani identifies with a “distant left socialist view,” yet acknowledges he comes from privilege, being the son of renowned Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, known for works like Salam Bombay and Monsoon Wedding.

After winning his seat as a New York State Assemblyman, Mamdani’s unique background in filmmaking has led him to advocate for socialist causes, exploring innovative ways to engage voters. “Why not create appealing and persuasive content for the campaigns as opposed to while in office?” he asked, adopting a somewhat Hollywood approach to political messaging.

Omar, along with fellow Democrats like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), praised Mamdani’s win. However, caution from Mayor Eric Adams (D) and Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY) suggest they view his policies as “too extreme.”

In a recent interview, Adams referred to Mamdani as a “snake oil salesman.” As he campaigns for re-election, now as an independent, Adams emphasizes the necessity for leadership that truly understands working people.

“I’ve always prioritized New Yorkers over politics and parties,” Adams remarked. “Our city needs independent leadership that caters to working individuals, motivating my run for mayor in the general election.”
