Ilhan Omar and Her Financial Disclosures
Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, has chosen not to discuss her updated financial disclosures, which may indicate that her net worth is actually negative. This comes after she significantly lowered her reported assets linked to her husband’s businesses.
When questioned by Fox News Digital about whether her husband still operates a consulting business and a winery, Omar did not respond. Previously, she stated that an initial filing claiming her assets had decreased by as much as $29.9 million was incorrect and incomplete, but has remained quiet despite repeated inquiries.
The scrutiny surrounding Omar’s finances began following a 2024 financial report that estimated hers and her husband’s combined assets to be between $6 million and $30 million, coinciding with a growing fraud scandal within the Somali community in Minnesota. However, the latest 2025 disclosure revealed their shared assets were adjusted to only about $125,000, a dramatic drop from previous estimates. This adjustment implies that her net worth could actually be negative, with liabilities outpacing her assets.
Both Omar and her husband reportedly carry separate debts ranging from $15,000 to $50,000, which stem from her student loans and his credit card obligations.
Another notable change in the financial reports involves Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett. His previously reported ownership interests in a winery and a venture capital advisory firm, valued at millions, now appear to have no value. Earlier records had shown Mynett’s stake in the winery valued between $1 million and $5 million and his interest in the advisory firm valued between $5 million and $25 million, but these are now listed as zero. Omar’s office claimed that earlier disclosures did not accurately reflect ownership and liabilities.
In light of these developments, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer expressed interest in having the Ethics Committee investigate Omar’s personal finances, particularly given the potential $29 million drop in her net worth. Furthermore, Vice President J.D. Vance announced that the U.S. Department of Justice is set to investigate the allegations against her, even though a formal inquiry isn’t open to the public yet.
Omar has sidestepped questions regarding the implications of her financial statements and the likelihood of an investigation. Even a fellow Minnesota lawmaker avoided similar inquiries last month. When pressed, Omar simply remarked, “On this sunny day, there is a chance that it will rain.”
