Reps. Ilhan Omar and Cori Bush commemorated Memorial Day by revealing they had no idea what Memorial Day means.
The pair appeared to confuse the holiday with Veterans Day in a since-deleted tweet from X (formerly Twitter).
“On Memorial Day, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country,” Omar wrote before the post was deleted. “We owe them more than gratitude. They are well within their rights to quality mental health services, employment opportunities, housing assistance, and the benefits they were promised.”
“This Memorial Day, and every day, we honor St. Louis’ veterans. To build a world free of war and violence, we must invest in universal health care for our veterans, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, education and economic opportunity,” Bush wrote in a similar post.
While Omar and Bush clearly didn’t understand the meaning of the holiday, X’s social media users did, and corrected them, sometimes ruthlessly, in the comments sections.
“They don’t know our history, they distort our history, and they’re taking high political positions without understanding what this country is about, what the traditions of this country are,” said Jason Whitlock.Fearless“It just bothers me and worries me that we have so little connection to our history,” Delano Squires said, adding:
“It didn’t really surprise me,” Squires said.
“I think they represent the average American more than we’d like to admit. A lot of people tend to confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day,” he explained, adding, “The fact that they’re elected officials means we hold them to a high standard, and I’m not particularly surprised.”
