Omar Blames Trump for Attack at Press Conference
Representative Ilhan Omar, from Minnesota, addressed a crowd at Carmel Mall in Minneapolis, on Wednesday, after being attacked the previous day. A man allegedly sprayed her with a substance during a press conference. Omar placed the blame on President Donald Trump, claiming he is “obsessed” with her.
In her address, she reiterated her call to eliminate the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following the indictment of Anthony James Kazmierczak, the man accused of the attack. “I think my presence here should send a message to the media that fear and intimidation will not work against me,” Omar stated. “Since I took office, every time the president resorts to hateful rhetoric about me and my community, the number of death threats I receive increases significantly.”
She noted that the attacks from Trump began shortly after he entered office in 2019. “I was a freshman, and while I had no real power, I received more death threats than any other Congress member,” she explained. “At one point, I required 24/7 police protection for myself and my family. Then Biden was elected, and Trump’s approval ratings dropped. But when he got back into office, he launched into another tirade.” Omar added, “As a result, my death threats have surged once again.”
Trump has a history of criticizing not only Omar but also other progressive politicians. Omar recounted how Kazmierczak, during a town hall she was hosting, used a syringe to spray her with the liquid after she called for the abolition of ICE and expressed her desire to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, following fatal incidents involving federal immigration agents.
Kazmierczak was quickly subdued by security and is facing preliminary charges of third-degree assault, according to law enforcement sources. In response to a question about the attack, Trump suggested it might have been staged. “No, I’m not thinking about her,” he reportedly said. “I think she’s a fraud. She probably sprayed herself.” Omar remarked that the attacker was likely frustrated that Trump’s deportation orders hadn’t resulted in a significant number of deportations.
Reflecting on the attack, Omar stated, “If Donald Trump hadn’t been president and hadn’t been so fixated on me, perhaps this situation might not have occurred. Ironically, just before the attack, he was talking about me on stage, and when asked about it, he casually mentioned, ‘I’m not thinking about her.'” The White House has been contacted for comment regarding the incident.
