Ilhan Omar ignores situation as Connor McNutt weds young employee

Rep. Ilhan Omar has reportedly congratulated a congressional aide on marrying a younger co-worker and even promoted the bride just a month before their wedding, according to the Post.

The Minnesota legislator, part of the “Squad,” attended the wedding on December 19 in rural Virginia, showing support for her chief of staff Connor McNutt, 36, and legislative aide Tareem Alam, 27. Both continue to work in Omar’s office.

All staff members were invited to the ceremony, and images of the occasion revealed the couple adorning traditional South Asian attire.

However, not everyone in Omar’s circle felt optimistic about this development.

One Democratic official expressed anger over what they saw as a “clear conflict” and a troubling power dynamic since McNutt was responsible for overseeing Alam.

“It’s disappointing for her to overlook such behavior in her office and then openly support it at the wedding. Especially considering her progressive stance,” the source remarked.

A spokesperson for Omar stated, “We typically don’t comment on staff members’ personal lives, but we’re happy for them.”

Her office clarified that Alam was not directly supervised by McNutt and said all promotions were in accordance with office policies, with disclosures made to “relevant parties.”

Regarding the promotion of the bride, which occurred a month prior to the wedding, sources are questioning whether McNutt had any influence over that decision.

This relationship is raising “serious concerns” about favoritism and possible misuse of resources, with critics pointing out a troubling “power imbalance.”

Another comment noted that the timing of the marriage announcement, which came just before the wedding, created unease among the office staff, leading some to voice their concerns.

Salary data shows that Alam earned approximately $67,000 in 2025, with additional compensation noted earlier in the year.

Previously, she worked as a junior staff assistant and managed Omar’s schedule. The timeline of Alam and McNutt’s relationship remains unclear.

McNutt has indicated on LinkedIn that he manages a team of 16 people, while the House typically operates with 18 staffers and several part-timers.

In 2018, the House passed a resolution prohibiting sexual relationships between members and their employees.

However, Omar’s office claims there’s no formal document restricting senior staff from engaging with subordinates, which differs for Alam.

While individual Congressional offices can set their own policies, they must adhere to federal laws regarding discrimination and harassment.

Omar’s personal marital history is notable—she obtained a marriage license in 2002 at just 19 but later had a religious ceremony before marrying Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009.

She reconciled with Ahmed Hirsi in 2018 after divorcing Elmi, but their relationship ended once more in 2019.

Omar then married Tim Mynett in 2020, following a scandal involving an affair that led to calls for an ethics probe.

Donald Sherman, CEO of Citizens for Responsible Ethics in Washington, commented on the situation, stating, “There seems to be no ethics violation here, but the Ethics Committee should implement guidance to prevent any romantic relationships in Congressional settings from breaching rules against favoritism and harassment.”
