Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has intensified her controversial comments regarding Charlie Kirk and his recent assassination.
During an appearance on Don Lemon’s YouTube show, she insisted, “There’s nothing to apologize for,” which sparked backlash following her previous remarks about Kirk shortly after his death while discussing students in Utah.
She expressed sympathy for Kirk’s family, saying, “It’s a tragedy that Charlie Kirk was killed like that. I feel for his widow and his children. They have to live with it for the rest of their lives,” as seen in a close-up video addressing the incident.
However, she added, “But there is no legacy to honor. It was a legacy filled with prejudice, hatred, white hegemony, and as a black woman and as a Muslim in this country, I refuse to participate in a history-changing chorus of what is recorded from this man.”
Omar emphasized that Kirk’s supporters, which include prominent figures like President Trump, are free to “do whatever they want,” but she maintains that she “is full of complacency” about their opinions.
Her comments have drawn significant criticism, especially as she dismissed the notion that Kirk aimed for civil dialogue in political discussions.
She also mentioned, “There are a lot of people talking about him,” and expressed frustration towards a progressive outlet, Zeteo.
Omar pointed out that it’s disingenuous to ignore Kirk’s history, claiming he engaged in “nasty rhetoric” on social media.
Later, she shared a video on X, urging Democrats and celebrities to “normalize Kirk,” describing Trump’s allies in somewhat harsh terms.
Following her comments, Trump responded last week by referencing a conversation he had with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohammoud, suggesting he might want to send Omar back to Somalia, to which the president replied, “I don’t want her.”
