Ilhan Omar Addresses Marriage and Investigation Claims
Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, firmly rejected allegations made on Wednesday that her marriage to her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, was a scheme to commit immigration fraud. She also responded to questions regarding any potential family ties with Elmi, stating, “Not to my knowledge.”
This interaction marked Omar’s first media engagement since federal agents conducted a search of her Washington, D.C., home on October 12. Despite this, her office has not replied to multiple requests for comments from Fox News Digital concerning the ongoing investigations or the recent raid.
In her discussion, Omar referenced how the rumors regarding her relationship with Elmi began, attributing them to a Somali blog claiming that he was her brother. “Somebody put it there,” she explained to Chris Hayes on MS Now.
Agents from Homeland Security Investigations executed a warrant as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation, looking into possible inaccuracies in Omar’s immigration and naturalization documents. Notably, the Justice Department has yet to publicly disclose the nature of the allegations.
The warrant for the search was approved by U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh from the District of Columbia.
Omar maintains that she has not engaged in any wrongdoing and has criticized the investigation as politically motivated. She made her first public appearance since the raid through a social media video filmed from a car, asking her supporters for financial support.
During the investigation, federal authorities served over a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including some directed at members of Omar’s family, and they confiscated her cellphone, according to The Associated Press. Reports indicate that her sister, Sahra Noor, spoke with investigators last week following the raid.
A separate investigation is currently scrutinizing Omar’s campaign finances and financial disclosures, which reportedly began during President Biden’s administration in 2024. A complaint regarding discrepancies in her wealth disclosures was previously dismissed by congressional ethics officials but is now under examination by external authorities, as announced last week by U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.
Both investigations are still underway.
