Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, expressed concerns last week regarding the state of the United States, suggesting it is becoming one of the “worst countries” globally.
“I grew up in a dictatorship, but I don’t recall witnessing this erosion of democracy,” she remarked. “It’s alarming to think that we might now be transforming into something so dire.”
Omar, who was born in Somalia, made her comments in relation to President Donald Trump’s military parade held on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. military.
The event coincided with both Flag Day and Trump’s 79th birthday, aimed at celebrating the nation. Before the parade, Omar expressed her dissatisfaction, stating, “Our president spends millions of dollars on this kind of display.”
“It’s really shocking, and it should serve as a wake-up call for all Americans. This isn’t the country we were raised to believe in,” she added. “It is far from what our founding fathers envisioned and not in line with the ideals or values upheld by our constitution. We need to stand together in cities that reject what is unfolding this week.”
Members of Congress, known as “the squad,” echoed similar sentiments, claiming that Trump is effectively “destroying our country.”
“Those contributing to the downfall of our nation should take a good look at themselves—and that includes Trump,” Omar continued. “He embodies the values we should reject, those which stand contrary to what America represents.”
She emphasized, “Protest and opposition are fundamental rights protected by the Constitution and are part of the First Amendment that applies to everyone here.”
Some critics have responded, including Fox News contributor Guy Benson, who shared a clip criticizing Omar’s remarks as exaggerated and lacking substance. He highlighted the absurdity of her concerns regarding the parade, suggesting that those upset might not fully grasp its significance.
Another commentator pointed out the sacrifices made by American service members, noting, “Our troops died protecting innocent lives in Somalia. I’m not sure that sacrifice resonates with Congresswoman Omar.”
