Omar to Host Town Hall Amid Minneapolis Turmoil
In Washington, Rep. Ilhan Omar is set to hold her first in-person town hall of the year in Minneapolis later this Tuesday. This event comes as the city grapples with unrest and scrutiny surrounding its financial issues.
Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, has openly criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) recent Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. Her town hall follows President Trump’s announcement that she is under investigation.
According to City Hall, “Congresswoman Omar will provide updates on her work in Congress, discuss available services from her office, and respond to your questions.”
The city’s chaotic situation is expected to dominate discussions. Last month, the Trump administration dispatched immigration enforcement officers to Minnesota, citing concerns over widespread welfare fraud.
Local protests erupted promptly, leading to violent encounters with police. Tragically, on January 7, an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman, after she reportedly drove her SUV toward him.
Just recently, Border Patrol agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, while he was restrained on the ground.
In response to the ongoing unrest, President Trump altered his strategy for Minneapolis, assigning border czar Tom Homan to oversee operations. Mayor Jacob Frey stated that there are approximately 3,000 immigration enforcement officers in the city compared to about 600 police officers.
Trump also had discussions with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Frey over the phone.
On Monday, he criticized Omar, reiterating she is under investigation. He stated, “The Department of Justice and Congress are keeping an eye on ‘Congressman’ Ilhan Omar, who left Somalia with nothing. Time will tell everything.”
Reports suggest that House Republicans are looking into how Omar’s net worth has seen a significant increase in recent years.
Omar, representing Minneapolis, responded that “years of ‘investigations’ have turned up nothing.” However, she isn’t only facing scrutiny from the Trump administration; the Biden administration’s Justice Department reportedly investigated her in 2024.
The focus of the investigation was reportedly on her campaign expenses and connections with foreigners, but it seems to have yielded no substantial findings.
Recently, questions have arisen regarding how Omar’s net worth ballooned to $30 million in just over a year, although the precise figure isn’t reflected in the House’s financial disclosures.
Earlier reports indicated that a significant portion of her wealth is linked to her husband, whose business, Rose Lake Capital, saw its value jump from almost nothing to between $5 million and $25 million in 2023.
Furthermore, the worth of his winery business reportedly increased from $1 million to $5 million in 2024.
