Ilia Marinin Recovers from Olympic Setback
Ilia Marinin, often referred to as the “God of the Quad,” appears to have successfully bounced back from his disappointment at the Olympics.
Last month, the 21-year-old Team USA standout entered the men’s free skate as a favorite for gold. But things didn’t go as planned; he fell twice during the competition, which pushed him down to 8th place.
Since then, he has made quite a comeback, achieving the title of three-time world champion.
After completing his routine, Marinin expressed his relief with a triumphant scream and a fist pump, signaling that he was ready to “move on” from his Olympic experience, which had troubled him for days.
In the free skate, he scored 218.11 points, with a total of 329.40 points, well ahead of Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama, who earned 306.67 points for silver. Another Japanese competitor, Shun Sato, claimed third with 288.54 points.
During a post-performance interview with NBC, Marinin openly admitted that his Olympic performance was “not good” and noted the mental challenges he faced throughout.
“Moments before I began, memories and thoughts rushed in, and I felt a bit overwhelmed. Life has been a mix for me, with both struggles and joys,” Marinin shared.
With some of the pressure lifted, he found a way to showcase his true talents on the ice.
Marinin is now the first skater to capture three consecutive men’s world championships since Nathan Chen, who did it in 2018, 2019, and 2021, after the 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic.
