Trump Discusses Palestinian State Possibility
On Monday, President Trump suggested that a Palestinian state might still be on the table, stating that “we need to see” if a one-state solution could be more effective for Gaza. This comment came as he was flying back to Washington on Air Force One after taking part in the historic signing of the Israel-Hamas peace agreement in Egypt.
When reporters inquired about how governance in Gaza would look should a peace deal be finalized, Trump responded, “Well, we’ll have to wait and see.” He noted that while many people prefer a one-state solution, others lean towards a two-state approach, adding that, “We need to take a look.” Interestingly, he mentioned that he hadn’t previously shared his preferred solution publicly.
The president’s peace framework consists of 20 points, proposing a “transitional” Palestinian commission governed by an international peace commission, which Trump himself would chair, to oversee the redevelopment of Gaza. It suggests that such redevelopment might eventually lead to a viable path toward Palestinian self-determination and statehood.
Trump emphasized, “At some point, we’re going to decide what we think is the right thing to do,” mentioning the importance of coordination with other countries. He also indicated that he hadn’t specifically discussed Gaza’s political future with the world leaders present during the signing ceremony. “I’m not talking about a single state or a dual state…I’m talking about rebuilding Gaza,” he clarified.
The president remarked, “That was the power room,” referring to the meeting with wealthiest nations capable of contributing to Gaza’s reconstruction.
As for the negotiations involving Israel and Hamas, Trump asserted that his administration “did it the right way” and expressed satisfaction with the timing of the agreement.
According to the first phase of the peace deal, Hamas is set to release 20 Israeli hostages that had been held during the two-year conflict in exchange for the freedom of Palestinian prisoners and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
