An illegal alien with a DUI conviction is accused of killing 50-year-old Dr. Malcolm Goodchild, a prominent surgeon and father of three, in September in Opelika, Alabama. .
Armin Rubido Gómez López, a 41-year-old illegal alien, arrested The Opelika Police Department filed a felony charge of reckless homicide this week in connection with Goodchild's death.
On Sept. 7, Lopez was driving south on a northbound exit ramp when he collided head-on with Goodchild. Police said Lopez was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
Goodchild was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Good Child, his obituary statea husband, father of three children, and a “talented and dedicated surgeon.”
“As a father, Malcolm was a source of immense pride and love for his children, Rebecca, Rachel, and Christopher,” his obituary said. “Malcolm was also a cherished brother to Michael, Simonne, Marlon, Deslin and Michelle. His relationships with his siblings were marked by warmth, humor and a deep sense of connection that will be fondly remembered.”
Lopez was previously arrested and convicted of drunk driving in 2022. It is unclear why Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not take him into custody after his conviction.
Lopez remains in the Lee County Detention Center without bail. ICE officials have taken him into custody and are asking him to be held if he is released at any time.
