Police have yet to determine a motive in what Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus described as “one of the most brutal murders” some law enforcement agencies have ever witnessed. The weapon used in the attack is believed to have been a knife.
The suspect in the case was the victim’s roommate, Kenor Baptiste, 30, who was found hiding in the nearby woods by several kindergarten police officers and his handler. Baptiste, Miltil and Saint-Villas reportedly lived together in the apartment for at least eight months.
Neuhaus acknowledged that Baptiste was also an illegal immigrant from Haiti and was awaiting a deportation hearing at the time of the stabbing. He added that authorities are currently investigating “where, how, [and] When Baptiste entered the United States
Baptiste is charged with felony second-degree murder, felony first-degree manslaughter, and misdemeanor weapons charges. He remains in ICE custody orange county jail.
Marie Pereira, a Haitian immigration lawyer who knew and spoke to some of the victims, insisted that no one saw Baptiste’s violent anger coming through. “Everyone is shocked because the killer was a kind, obedient, gentle, hard-working young immigrant with no history of violence,” she said.
Neuhaus argued that the Biden administration and its lax immigration policies are at least partly to blame for the tragic death toll. “This is a failure at every level of the federal government,” he said.
