An illegal immigrant who was accused of assaulting two NYPD officers in May and was subsequently placed on probation has been released on bail on unrelated charges.
According to the criminal complaint investigated by the prosecutor’s office, New York PostAlexander Ayala, 24, is accused of stealing an unidentified woman’s cellphone and Amazon credit card near the intersection of 11th Avenue and West 49th Street around 3:30 p.m. on August 12, then fleeing on a bicycle. Citing the complaint, The Washington Post reported that Ayala attempted to use the credit card at two businesses later that day.

Ayala was charged with two counts of third-degree identity theft and one count of unlawful possession of stolen property, the Post reported. Because neither charge is eligible for bail, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, led by Democrat Alvin Bragg, has asked the court to grant Ayala probation, the Post added.
Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Simeon Hanif agreed, granting Ayala bail, the newspaper reported.
But Ayala was already facing multiple charges for earlier, more serious crimes at the time.
Ayala was released from custody earlier this year after being charged with two counts of assault and one count of obstruction. Clash with NYPD officers At the Roosevelt Hotel, which serves as a shelter for illegal immigrants.
On May 19, a group of people at the shelter were accused of attacking two police officers who were responding to a report of a fight between two groups of illegal immigrants. Ayala is accused of not only taking part in the melee, but also stealing the officers’ hats and trying to take them as a trophy. Three other illegal immigrants were also arrested for their participation in the attack.
One officer was bitten on the left arm and suffered bruising to his left leg, while the other officer suffered a head injury and a wound to his arm. The NYPD officers were treated at a nearby hospital.
According to the paper, prosecutors recommended that Ayala be held on $20,000 cash bail or $20,000 in insurance and $40,000 in partial surety, but he and his alleged accomplice were placed on probation. At least two other people involved in the brawl have also reportedly been released on previous arrests.
Additionally, Ayala had reportedly been arrested since December on suspicion of domestic violence at the time.
He is due to appear in court Sept. 12 on both the May assault charge and the more recent theft charge.
Sources told The Post that the attack on the officers was similar to an incident in January in Times Square that was caught on camera when a mob of illegal immigrants punched and kicked two NYPD officers.
Group of 20 New York Republican Senators In February, they wrote a letter to New York Governor Kathy Hockle urging her to fire Mr. Bragg, slamming his response to the Times Square attack and saying his botched actions “must be the final straw.”
“The public safety of New Yorkers is clearly at risk,” the lawmakers wrote.
