An undocumented immigrant accused of attacking and seriously injuring two homeless people with a baseball bat in Jefferson County, West Virginia, has been charged with murdering a 33-year-old woman in Berkeley County, West Virginia.
David Antonio Calderon (46), an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Reserved A man was arrested in Frederick County, Virginia, after a warrant was issued for his arrest on suspicion of killing a woman in Berkeley County earlier this month.
On May 6, law enforcement found the body of a 33-year-old woman after firefighters extinguished a burning couch in Berkeley County. The woman had been reported missing from the Jefferson County home confinement program.
In April, police allege Calderon randomly assaulted two homeless people with a baseball bat behind a Walmart store in Jefferson County, seriously injuring them. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued on suspicion of aggravated assault.
Just days after the woman’s body was discovered, Calderon was arrested on warrants related to the two attacks. After being charged with assault, she was charged with the woman’s murder.
Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office officials said Mr. Calderon sought asylum in Canada via the northern U.S. border, but was denied. He was then turned over into the custody of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and released with a Notice to Appear (NTA) before a federal immigration judge.
Calderon remains in custody at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center in Frederick County while awaiting extradition to Berkeley County on murder charges.
