Illegal immigrant arrested after stabbing of teen girl at Indiana baseball game: police

An illegal immigrant from Honduras who was previously deported was arrested Sunday after an intensive manhunt after he was considered a suspect in the random stabbing of a teenage girl at a baseball game in Indiana, authorities said.

A search began Saturday for 26-year-old Dimas Gabriel Yañez after a 14-year-old girl was stabbed in the hand with a butcher knife during her brother's baseball game in the unincorporated area of ​​Lowell, Indiana, according to the Lake County, Indiana, Sheriff's Office.

When the girl's mother tried to help, the suspect also tried to stab her before running away, authorities said. The girl was later treated and released from the hospital.

Authorities recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack, named Yanez as a suspect and warned the public that he should be considered armed and dangerous.

As the massive search continued into Sunday, the sheriff's office said Yanez had been seen in southern Lake County.

Yanez was arrested late Sunday afternoon after a Sheriff's Department deputy spotted him running through a cornfield, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators believe Yanez had been trying to cut his hair in an attempt to change his appearance and evade police shortly before his arrest.

The sheriff's office said Yanez was deported to Honduras in 2018 and “may have engaged in criminal activity throughout the United States since his illegal return.”

The sheriff's office said the Department of Homeland Security was notified of Yañez's arrest on Sunday.

Yanez remains in custody at the Lake County Jail. There was no immediate information provided about whether Yanez is facing any charges.
